What is a pregnancy test?

What are the advantages of using a home pregnancy test?

Signs and symptoms of early pregnancy

There are some indicators of early pregnancy that may suggest that it is time to take an early pregnancy test. One of the most common indicators is a, which means light blood loss. How a pregnancy test works

Because an early pregnancy test looks for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the urine, all you need to do is urinate on a stick. The test gives a positive result if HCG is found in the urine and a negative result if it is not. Testing can only be done after your period is over, not before. Because of the low level of HCG, the test would not detect it even if you were pregnant. If the test is done too early, the result may be false-negative. In this case, if you do not have your period, we recommend that you repeat the test after a few days or weeks.

Step-by-step instructions:

  • Always read the instructions before using a test, as they can differ slightly depending on the type of test. The most common pregnancy tests are those with dashes. Detailed instructions:
  • Urinate into a cup or receptacle that is clean and dry. The urine should preferably be collected early in the morning.
  • Remove the foil from the test strip.
  • Hold the coloured end of the stick in your hand (opposite the test area with a MAX mark).
  • Hold the stick vertically and immerse the end of the stick in urine that does not exceed the MAX line.
  • Hold for a few seconds (as directed in the instructions), usually 5-10 seconds. The control line appears, indicating that the test was done correctly (no control line means that the test failed).
  • After removing the test from the urine, place it face up on a clean, dry and non-absorbent surface.
  • Wait for the result (according to the instructions).

You are pregnant if you see two coloured lines. The test is negative if only one coloured line is visible.

A positive pregnancy test

At least one (control) coloured line must appear on every early pregnancy test. Otherwise, the test is considered to have failed. Congratulations if you see not only the control line but also the test line coloured.  

You have a positive pregnancy test and are expecting a baby. Do not be concerned if you see a 'ghost' (a very pale line on the test). The colour intensity of the coloured line does not affect this. You are pregnant if HCG is present (ghost or strong), it is a positive pregnancy test. 

Make an appointment with your doctor as soon as you discover you are pregnant to confirm the pregnancy and the positive test result and to rule out an ectopic pregnancy. Unfortunately, false positives do occur, but they are extremely rare. If you have a positive pregnancy test, it is therefore an excellent idea to have your doctor confirm the pregnancy. He will perform an ultrasound scan or take your blood for testing.

A negative pregnancy test

A negative pregnancy test is one in which there is only one coloured line. Because the egg your body released was not fertilised, there is no HCG in your bloodstream, indicating that you are not pregnant. However, you may get a false negative result even if you are pregnant. Why? If the test is done too early and the HCG level has not yet been detected by the test. In this situation, your period will be delayed and you can repeat the test later. 

Take a break of a few days or a week before testing again. If you are pregnant, your HCG level should already be high enough to be identified by the test. If the result is again negative, but you do not have your period, consult your doctor.
